Getting copies

Get copies of collections found on Trove by downloading, ordering through the National Library of Australia's Copies Direct service, or by contacting the organisation that holds the collection.


Copyright restrictions may apply when getting copies of physical items and digital content. You may only be able to get a copy of part of the item/content and you may need to seek permission from a copyright owner.


Downloading copies

You may be able to download digital copies of online collections, which are linked from the Trove record. See our guide for instructions.


Ordering copies

National Library of Australia items

Most items in the National Library of Australia collection are physical items. Order copies of items through the National Library of Australia’s Copies Direct service.

Note: Using Copies Direct will incur a fee and copyright restrictions apply when getting copies of physical items and digital content. You may only be able to get a copy of part of the item/content and you may need to seek permission from a copyright owner.

Ordering options vary according to the type of item you want to order:

Order from the Trove viewer

  1. While the item is in the Trove viewer, select Buy     in the sidebar on the left hand side of the viewer.
  2. The option to select a page range may be available. Select with the All or Current buttons, or by moving the sliders on the range bar.
  3. Select Order now. This will direct you to a Copies Direct order form pre-filled with the item details.

Order from the Trove record

  1. While viewing the item's Trove record, select the Buy button underneath the item image thumbnail/s.
  2. If the National Library of Australia - Copies Direct    or Order Now buttons appear, you can select to go to a Copies Direct order form pre-filled with the item details.
  3. If these buttons don't appear, you have the option to select from the available links to external websites that may have the item for purchase.

Order through the National Library of Australia catalogue

If the previous options don't suit your needs, you can try ordering your item through the National Library of Australia catalogue record.

Ordering options vary according to the type of item you want to order:

Access catalogue from the Trove viewer

  1. While the item is in the Trove viewer, select Details   in the sidebar on the left hand side of the viewer.
  2. In the Details window, select View Catalogue  . This will direct you to the National Library of Australia catalogue record for the item. 
  3. Select Order a copy to proceed with the order.
  4. Select Add to Cart. This will direct you to a Copies Direct order form pre-filled with the item details.
  5. Complete the form to order the item.

Access catalogue from the Trove record

  1. While in the Trove record, select the  BorrowBuyOrder or Get button underneath the item image thumbnail/s.
  2. Select the National edeposit (NLA)   or National Library of Australia option if it is available. 
  3. You may need to select View Catalogue  .
  4. You will be directed to the National Library of Australia catalogue record list for the item. 
  5. Select the record for the item you want to order.
  6. Select Order a copy to proceed with the order.
  7. Select Add to Cart. This will direct you to a Copies Direct order form pre-filled with the item details.
  8. Complete the form to order the item.

Items from other organisations

To get copies of items held by other organisations, you will need to contact the organisation. For instructions on how to do this, see our Borrowing page. Some libraries, such as State libraries, will have a copying service, or you may need to visit the library in person to make copies. You may also be able to place an inter-library loan via your local, institutional or State library.

Note: Some content on Trove is still in copyright and therefore to obtain a copy, you will need to seek permission from the copyright owner.

People and Organisations records contain a link to the websites that contributed the information. Those websites may have options for obtaining or purchasing resources.


Buying items

You cannot buy books or other physical items from Trove directly. The Buy button under some item records provides links to external websites that may have items for purchase.

To purchase an original copy of a newspaper, you will need to contact the commercial organisation that sells them.

Contributing where to buy a physical item

You can add the information on where an item can be purchased in the Notes section of the Trove record.
